WHAT IS “SPIRITUAL REALISM?”

What I mean is, I’m a fiction writer who weaves story telling, the natural world, emotion, spirit, reality, hope and humor together to evoke a heartfelt non-cynical response from readers.

French philosopher, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, said we are “not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” My characters live that, whether they admit it or not.  No one is immune from consequences…life…plot…reality…pain…love…or redemption.
 
My characters do the heavy lifting. Despite their adolescence…protagonists Max and Molli, are forced to swim in deep questions, braving life’s often treacherous currents as they shine light and dark on eternal themes, reality and hope. What is it like to simply be human, to experience life…joy…love…humor…death…spiritual realism? Throw in a dash of absurdity of life…and you have my writing style.
 
Fiction comes to me as something like Plato’s forms…meets a jigsaw puzzle…meets “that person” I saw today on the train. Truthfully. Ruthlessly. Humorously. Honestly.
 
I’ve been trying to come up with a slightly cheeky way to describe the genre my new 374-page novel, All Of The Above,  falls into. The one I’m still mulling over is “Spiritual Realism.” Why? Because of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s quote above. Because that’s the way I often understand, see, translate the world. There are meaningful stories to be found there.
