The setting for this collection of photographs, Imprinted on This Rock Forever in Love, is a 127-acre peninsula on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois on the shores of Lake Michigan. Most of the photographs were taken during a one-year period starting on September 1 and ending on September 1 of the following year. The pages of the book are laid out roughly in chronological order. Only a handful of photographs from the collection are included on this website. But the book contains more than 160 photographs of painted rocks and is updated each year. You can order the book from this site. The artists and authors are known only to themselves, but most of the rocks were painted by Northwestern University students who obviously wanted to express love, gratitude and thankfulness to their friends, families and lovers. It’s been said that Love is at the center of the universe and I think that the people who took the time and effort to paint these rocks have proven that to be true. When they had a chance to make a statement by simply painting a sentiment on rock they expressed love, friendship and hope. Wind, water and time have eroded some to the point of being almost illegible but still hold some kind of emotion. Some people chiseled initials and hopeful sentiments into the smooth rock faces, and you may be as surprised as I was to see a life-size mermaid with an Afro haircut carved from one rock, her gaze forever looking skyward. My hope is that you come away from this book with the same sense of optimism and cheerfulness I felt while shooting the photographs and compiling this collection.

Your Rock Stories

The below stories were sent to me from people who painted rocks

"It was the perfect place"

We were happy to see that our rock was included in the slideshow and we will be sure to check out the book at Norris.

Our rock story started in Jan 2002 when Alan went on on a cold January day and painted a verse on the rock and the letters HBD, R (Happy birthday, Rachel)! I was sent on a shivering scavenger hunt by my friends and the rock Alan painted was one of the stops. I can't believe he painted it in January. Soon after that we started officially dating.

Unfortunately that original design melted away with the spring thaw so we repainted the rock with light blue paint, another verse, and all sorts of other designs on Memorial Day 2002. It was fun to decorate "our" rock and make it "our" spot on the lakefill.

As the years went by we spent time there in the warm months studying and just enjoying the beauty of the lake.

On Memorial Day 2004, I was supposed to be escorting Alan to a surprise birthday party on the lakefill but needed to stall so I dragged him to our rock. I made some lame excuse and said I just really wanted to see it.

We arrived at the rock and I saw a blanket laid out in front of it with roses on it. I was very confused. Alan lead me over and proposed right there. It was the perfect place. I smiled so much my face hurt and kept crying.

As we sat basking in our moment, I told him we had somewhere to be. He replied that he knew because he had planned the whole thing.

That is our rock story, thanks for taking a picture of it.

"Some of the best memories of my life!"

I too painted on those same rocks back in the 70's. I remember painting a phoenix rising from the water and a lady bug which represented my beautiful red haired girlfriend. Even after all these years ...there are small remnants of those paintings that still exist. I spent many summers there swimming off the rocks and drinking quarts of Stroh's and smoking. Some of the best memories of my life! I still go back every year to dive off my personal rock and relive those wonderful memories. J.
